Some love stories are loud and fast. Others are slow and steady, built over time with intention, loyalty, and quiet confidence.
Emily and Emmett’s story began in 2018 at the Englewood High School pool in Jacksonville, Florida, where they both worked as lifeguards during the summer. She was sixteen. He was seventeen. What started as casual conversations between shifts slowly turned into Taco Tuesday dinners at Tijuana Flats and rides home after work.
As a Jacksonville wedding photographer, I love when a couple’s story is rooted in shared hometown memories. Their relationship did not begin with grand gestures. It began with consistency.
Eventually, Emily gathered the courage to ask Emmett on their first date. They went thrift shopping, followed by dinner at Chick fil A with her sister as their chaperone. On August 25, 2018, Emmett officially asked her to be his girlfriend by writing the question on a chocolate milkshake from Dunkin Donuts. Sweet, thoughtful, and completely them.
Throughout college, their relationship grew stronger through long distance while Emily attended Florida State University and Emmett studied at the University of North Florida. Their love story truly reflects their three chosen words: slow and steady.
When it came time to propose, Emmett planned a morning that felt like home.
He picked Emily up for breakfast at Sweet Theory, one of Jacksonville’s favorite local spots. The plan was to take donuts to Memorial Park for a picnic. Instead, Emmett surprised her by heading to Fletcher Park in San Marco, where a small chapel and quiet greenery created the perfect setting for a Jacksonville proposal.
As soon as they arrived, Emily spotted her friends Kennedy and Gracie waiting nearby to capture the moment. She immediately knew what was happening.
They laid out their picnic blanket, and before they even touched the glazed donut or cinnamon roll, Emmett got down on one knee.
The rest of the morning was spent taking engagement photos in San Marco and finally enjoying their Sweet Theory breakfast together.
As a Jacksonville engagement photographer, proposals like this are always meaningful because they are deeply personal and tied to the places that shaped their relationship.
Emily shared that she knew about a year into dating. Their lives fit together naturally. Emmett had always shown kindness, selflessness, and steady love from the very first summer.
Emmett described it as a collection of small things. Her level head. Her reasonable approach to life. The way she supported him through college. The way she cared.
Not one dramatic moment. Just quiet certainty.
Emily and Emmett are envisioning a park or beach engagement session in Jacksonville next March during spring break. With their story tied to Memorial Park, Sweet Theory, and even St. Augustine taco nights, there are so many beautiful locations that reflect who they are.
As a Jacksonville wedding and engagement photographer, sessions like this are about more than posing. They are about revisiting the places that shaped your story and preserving them in a timeless way.
Whether we photograph at Memorial Park, along the St. Johns River, or on the beaches of Northeast Florida, their engagement session will reflect the calm, steady love that has carried them from high school lifeguards to fiancé and fiancée.
As they continue planning their wedding day in Jacksonville, choosing the right venue and photographer matters deeply. For couples considering a Ribault Club wedding or another Jacksonville waterfront venue, it is important to work with a photographer who understands the area’s light, history, and natural beauty.
The Ribault Club on Fort George Island offers classic Southern architecture, waterfront views, and golden hour portraits that feel timeless. As a Ribault Club wedding photographer, I always prioritize natural light, true to color imagery, and emotional storytelling that reflects the real beauty of the day.
Emily and Emmett’s slow and steady love deserves to be documented with the same care and intention that built it.
